Initial letter recognition will be introduced using Letterland. Letterland welcomes children into an imaginary world where each letter develops its own character and personality.

For early reading Busy Bees will use a carefully balanced programme of guided reading from books of graded difficulty matched to each child’s independent reading level. The Oxford Reading Tree is a well established scheme that makes learning to read fun. Children readily identify with the characters Biff, Chip and Kipper and their dog Floppy. Stories focus on situations that children can recognise from their own experiences, such as a wobbly tooth or losing a favourite toy! The stories are carefully written using simple, natural-sounding words that children can readily understand. Key words are repeated throughout the scheme so that children gradually increase the number of words they can recognise and read.

As a child’s reading progresses Busy Bees has a library of fiction, non-fiction, poetry books and plays.

For whole class and group work Busy Bees has a selection of big books.

To aid visual, audio and interactive learning and to add a further dimension to capture a child’s interest Busy Bees has the following resources:

  • Story and song cassettes / CDs.
  • Literacy fans to aid spelling.
  • Games.
  • Puzzles.
  • Puppet theatre and puppets.
  • Sandpaper letters.
  • Sand boxes.
  • Roll and Write letters

Once a child has progressed through letter recognition, phonic patterns and early reading, they will begin to learn how to spell and spelling rules. Busy Bees will incorporate two spelling schemes – Nelson Spelling (published by Nelson Thornes) and Focus on Spelling (published by Collins). When an appropriate level has been reached, children will have weekly spelling tests.

Grammar, Comprehension and Composition

As each child further develops, grammar will be introduced, as will comprehensions and compositions. Four main schemes will be used:

  • Focus on Composition

3. Collins:

  • Focus on Comprehension
  • Focus on Grammar and Punctuation

  • Focus on Writing

4. Folens:

  • Language Works
  • Basic Rules of English Grammar
